In this first session, the status of the Arts Centre and professional arts activities generally, came under scrutiny. On the one hand, the very direct way in which government used and encouraged certain programmes within the arts to develop non art interests, seemed to be contrary or divergent from an art pursued purely for itself. On the other hand, art that could be put to use or could drive progressive programs, became an interesting possibility. Also the question of whether the Treignac Project could maintain its artist run dynamic after all building works had been completed, and regular funding secured, seemed questionable. Clear ideas about a migrating network of specialists, who would come together on specific projects, were discussed. This group could fulfil the function of a geographically limited Art Centre, while retaining both a progressive knowledge generating function, and a more pure arts relationship between artists.
