Against a backdrop of the iconic representation of architecture, Regard Matrixiel presents the work of seven artists who expose the un-thought elements of our built environment. From the transformative potential of demolition and the barricade, an engagement with the deranged layers of urban time, to a neo-suprematist imagining of live - space. The show ties together disparate readings of buildings through an evocation of the work and language of Bracha L. Ettinger's work Matrixial Borderspace. Could a pre-gendering, feminine subjectivity supplement our view of our subjective and shared spaces? These artists present a multiple gaze; 'fragmented; several; between and with'. It is a conception of the potential of an elastic revolution of constructed interfaces.
Emma Holmes uses a mix of techniques to create her collages. She creates a non-perspective landscape that allows her to discuss urban space as the field of human experience. Within this format she is also able to consider the power of representation and the ubiquity of the image. Emma Holmes was born and grew up in Spain until the age of 12, then moved from Chicago, to Chile and then to Devon, Vermont, Mexico, and finally to London.
Simona Brinkman's work is animated by a sense of paradox. Her practice, which spans a diverse range of media including sculpture, sound, video and installation, is ideas-driven but is also rooted in the aesthetic qualities of the materials used. At its heart is a nervousness about value, meaning, significance (including the work's own) and a kind of doubt about the authenticity of perceptual experience. Born in Milan, now lives in London
Manuela Barczewski has developed a photographic vision that works against the hierarchical representation of depicted spaces. Her images of unorganised domestic materiel are graphically flattened to reveal a geometric construction with echoes of Suprematism. This reference hints at the potential to re-organise and re-imagine our modes of habitation by adopting differing representations for ourselves. Currently living in London and Düsseldorf, Germany
Friederike Hamann's new projection works create a hybrid space bringing built space and its representations together with the compressed plane of information graphics. The work uses a combination of visual media to reflect and rearrange the basic characteristics of an architectural environment in order to explore its physical and psychological boundaries. The works subtly loosen and expand these environments and connect them to a larger context of natural phenomenon. The goal is not to destroy the innate qualities of the existing structure but to open up new perspectives onto these architectural realities.
Cadine Navarro. Her painting seeks a relationship to the dynamics of the world with particular emphasis on issues originating from cultural belonging, transmission of traditions and architectural space. Her paintings are shown in small clusters that group together different subjects to create an interpretative 'mood'. They are often sombre or melancholic, with a disturbing ambivalence towards the reality they depict.
July Video Coalition formed in 2010 in response to a desire to find a horizontal platform through which to make artistic exchanges. The July Video Coalition is a geographically dispersed group, based from Paris & Berlin to Seoul & Washington. They connect via the Internet and social media, with impromptu meetings to make work. Their works look at group identity and social space.
Sarah Gerats' work engages with the physical location of a body in space and the deformation this brings both to the landscape and to the body. She highlights the body's corporeal qualities in relation to a dominating and oppressive site. She refuses the fixing gaze of the camera yet is always tied to it.
