In the photographic image, transformed by the ruptures of contemporary video, there is a revelation of the complexities of an unfixable, oscillating self-identity. This ‘identity revealed by its images’ is explored through the works of six international artists whose work dissects and traverses the opposing worlds thrown up by the photographers gaze.
The exhibition functions on this swing between private and public, self and other, central and peripheral, and places it at the heart of any consideration of film or photography. The notion of a plural reality that epitomises the core revelation of film, rests on this fluctuation between the fixing and splintering times of film. Film-Time with its edited wholeness, disguises its fragmented and fragmenting heart at the same time that it crystallises its subject for its audience.
