Houille Blanche, Terre Froide

30.06 - 26.08

An exhibition by Organe de Concrétisation de Recherches

Based on interviews and research on the dams situated on the Plateau de Millevaches in the Limousin region in France, "Houille Blanche, Terre Froide" explores the intricate interrelationship that an investigation has with its subjects. The study is both a scientific research and an artistic meditation on the loyalties, power and possible future of low-density areas such as the landscape around Treignac. It proposes a re-examination of the place these localities have in an often romanticized urban imagination, and through the metaphor of the dam, asks whether it is possible to alter local infrastructures to re-invigorate the dynamism of naturally low-density regions.

The group have engaged to think the specificities of this region as well as to look at the broader implications for isolated areas in general. The exhibition underlines the relationship rural areas have to large-scale global production chains as well as setting these conditions within the context of artistic reflection.

The Organe de Concrétisation de Recherches (or Research Manifestation group) is a collaborative project between Kapwani Kiwanga, Sam Basu (both artists), Caroline Hancock (curator) and Alice Peinado (anthropologist), that proposes the potential of a univocal object for artistic and scientific research. The ground for establishing this shared space is defined though a matrix of documentary, ethnographic and archival methods within the formal flexibility of arts practices.

The exhibition also includes the video Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas: Battle of Easel Point – Memorial Project Okinawa (2003) by Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, lent by the Kadist Art Foundation Kadist in Paris.
